Privacy Policy

Starve ("we", "us", "our") makes the Starve iOS app ("the App"). This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We've tried to keep it short and plain.
1. Summary
- We don't sell your personal data. Ever.
- We don't run ads in the App.
- Your food log lives on your device and (optionally) in your private iCloud.
- What you type is sent to our AI provider for processing, then discarded — your text is not stored on our servers or used for training.
- We collect only what we need to run the App and improve it.
2. Information we collect
a. Information you provide
- Profile: goals you set (calorie target, macro targets), optional age, height, weight, and activity level used to compute recommendations.
- Food log entries: meals you type into the app and the macros computed from them.
- Support correspondence: if you email us, we keep that thread.
b. Information collected automatically
- Device data: iOS version, device model, App version, and locale, used for diagnostics.
- Crash and performance logs: anonymized stack traces and performance metrics.
- Usage analytics: aggregated, non-identifying counts (e.g. "scan completed", "goal updated").
c. Information from third parties
- Apple: if you subscribe, Apple shares your subscription status with us. We never see your payment information.
- Voice transcription: if you use voice dictation, your audio is transcribed via OpenAI's Whisper API and discarded after transcription.
3. How we use information
- To run the App's core features (logging, recognition, syncing your goals).
- To process payments and manage subscriptions through Apple.
- To diagnose crashes, fix bugs, and improve accuracy.
- To respond to your support requests.
- To comply with legal obligations.
4. AI processing
When you log a meal by typing, the text you entered is sent over an encrypted connection to our AI inference provider for analysis. After the result is returned, the input is discarded by us and our provider is contractually required not to store or train on it. The result (food names, portions, macros) is returned to your device and saved in your log.
You can review and edit any value the AI returns, or enter macros manually, at any time.
5. Sharing
We share data only with the service providers needed to operate the App:
- Apple: App distribution, payments, push notifications, iCloud storage.
- AI inference provider: processes the food text you enter; does not retain or train on it.
- Cloud infrastructure: hosting, error monitoring, and analytics on a strict need-to-know basis.
- Legal: if required by law, court order, or to protect rights and safety.
We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
6. Data retention
Your account data is retained while your account is active. If you delete your account (in-app or by emailing privacy@starve.app), we permanently erase your data within 30 days, except where we are required to keep records by law (e.g., tax records of subscription payments).
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live (e.g., EU/EEA, UK, California), you may have rights to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you;
- Correct inaccurate data;
- Delete your data;
- Object to or restrict processing;
- Receive a portable copy of your data;
- Withdraw consent at any time.
To exercise these rights, email privacy@starve.app. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of them.
California (CCPA/CPRA)
California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion, correct inaccurate information, and opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CPRA.
8. Children
Starve is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact privacy@starve.app and we'll delete it.
9. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards: TLS in transit, encryption at rest, scoped access controls, and regular review of dependencies. No system is 100% secure, but we work hard to protect your data.
10. International transfers
We're based in the United States. If you use Starve from outside the U.S., your information may be processed in the U.S. or other countries. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll post the new version here and update the "Last updated" date. Material changes will be announced in-app.
